Queries and Synopsis DOs and DON'Ts
DO:
Use quality paper and a quality printer. Write a succinct, clear,
one-page letter. Provide a word count for your manuscript. Explain what
kind of work it is. Include a one-sentence plot summary. Provide relevant
background information. Enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope. Expect
to wait up to ninety days for a response.
DO:
Proofread your work carefully. Include the entire
plot in your synopsis. Make the first chapter as involving as anything
in the book. Adhere to industry standards in your presentation: make sure
your manuscript is typed, double-spaced, and clean, with your name and
the book's title on each numbered page. Be respectful, positive, and appreciative.
DON'T:
Send by email. Talk about how other agents and editors
have mistreated or misunderstood you. Use weird fonts, or a lot of exclamation
points or italics. Compare your work to that of bestselling authors. Express
concerns that someone will steal your work. Use the opinions of friends
and relatives as confirmation of your talent. Send your only copy. Refuse
to submit chapters before a contract is signed. Submit more than one hundred
pages total.
